Workshops

  • Interpre-science-tection: Fire Island NS took a unique approach to a resource management issue, the overpopulation of whitetail deer, assembling an interdisciplinary task force and an outside agency to take the issue head on. Participants to this workshop learned how park staff combined their efforts with the Humane Society to reduce the population on a fragile barrier island.
  • Canadian Monitoring Network: This new Canadian national monitoring initiative helps communities inform and influence local sustainability, by monitoring changes in the local ecosystem and taking an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving.
  • Managing Parks Like a Business: NPS and NPCA have initiated a business-planning program for national parks. These plans enable parks to express our true cost of doing business and where we fall short financially.
  • Financial Management - What Your Parents Never Told You: Thinking about the future, retirement, investments, and estates. What about your aging parents? Now is the time to learn and the time to act.
  • National Park Service Fundamentals Training Program: The NPS Fundamentals Program is designed to create a workforce dedicated to achieving the mission of the National Park Service. Though available to all NPS employees, Fundamentals is especially appropriate for new employees. The training manager of universal competencies gave a briefing on this new five-part, two-year course of study.

Special Interest Group Meetings: Meeting space was available for informal discussions on topics of interest to participants.
