Legal Documents, Background:
Concealed-Carry Firearms Regulations in the National Park System
Update
June 2009
The firearms regulation approved by executive order to take effect on Jan. 9, 2009, was halted by the federal court in March. Subsequently, Congress passed legislation on May 23, 2009, that will allow any and all types of firearms per state law in all units of the National Park System. However, the law, passed as an amendment to the Credit Card Holders Bill of Rights Act, does not take effect until Feb. 23, 2010. Once in effect, state law will dictate the legality of all firearms. Until then, it is not legal for anyone to carry a loaded and concealed firearm on national parks lands. That will change next year unless some other law is passed or court action takes place.

New Development
Senator Tom Coburn, R-Okla., has proposed an amendment (see attached) that would allow ALL kinds of guns (rifles, shotguns, assault weapons, handguns) to be carried in units of the National Park System, consistent with the laws of the state in which the unit lies.
