Sunday, Oct. 31, Lava Butte/Lava Lands Visitor Center tour, Newberry National Volcanic Monument — (CANCELED)
Visit one of the few National Monuments in the country managed by the U. S. Forest Service. Newberry National Volcanic Monument's Lava Lands Visitor Center will be opened for a special behind-the-scenes tour exclusively for Ranger Rendezvous participants. Larry Berrin, Director of Conservation Education, will be our personal guide and will give us an overview of the monument, guided tour through an ancient lava flow (weather permitting), and will open the access road to the top of Lava Butte for individual exploration (conditions permitting). Since the monument is closed this time of year, the Visitor Center will be closed during the guided tour. Transportation will be via personal vehicles. Meet at the Lava Lands Visitor Center at 1 p.m. No entrance fee, but a $5 donation to the interpretive association is suggested.

Sunday, Oct. 31, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, 12:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Scott Ritner, ranger at Painted Hills Unit, will lead an afternoon outing through the fascinating geological and paleontological Painted Hills Unit, 1.5 hours east of Bend (off highway 26 & 9 miles NW of Mitchell). Allow an extra 3.5 hours if you wish to include a self-guided visit to the new Paleontological Center an additional hour east. Carpool from Bend at 12:30 p.m. Meet Scott at the picnic area at the entrance of Painted Hills Unit at 2 p.m. for a two-hour walk and presentation. Carpool back, arriving in Bend at 5:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 2, Service Project 1-5 p.m. Join the Director and Oregon State Park staff in a service project at Pilot Butte State Park intended to highlight the value of community involvement in public lands management. Rendezvous participants will maintain old and construct new trails, build a split rail fence and restore impacted areas. Wear suitable warm clothing (bring a rain jacket, just in case) and bring work gloves. Please sign up when you register for the Rendezvous (on registration page).

This dynamic talk by Iditarod finisher Liz Parrish will cover how to build your own personal leadership potential...by making mistakes! Using examples from her years training for and competing in distance sled dog racing, her program shows exactly what she uses to develop the lead dogs on her racing team...and how you can apply that to your own career and leadership challenges.

Updates on the current status and major initiatives for major NPS programs from a panel of Associate Directors or their representatives. Includes Visitor and Resource Protection (Chief Ranger), Interpretation and Education, Natural Resource Stewardship and Science, and Partnerships and Civic Engagement Moderator: Pat Grediagin

Tuesday, Nov. 2

Environmental Leadership Panel: Climate, Oceans and Environmental Mitigation, 9-10:15 a.m.
NPS senior managers of the Climate Change Response Program, the Ocean Initiative and the Greening Initiative will discuss the recent progress the NPS has made in adaptation to a changing climate, conservation and mitigation. The NPS is leading by example. Moderator: Barry Sullivan

International Ranger Federation & Critical Incident Stress Management Updates, 9-10:15 a.m.
The Critical Incident Stress program involves a cadre of trained peers who provide assistance to NPS staff involved in a variety of stress-inducing incidents. Learn about the program and the latest program direction. Moderator: Jenny Matsumoto

How to Get a Job with the National Park Service, 9-10:15 a.m.
How do you get that first job with the NPS? Marcia Schramm will describe federal government hiring practices and provide tips on applying for seasonal and permanent positions with the NPS. Moderator: Pat Grediagin

Partnerships in Conservation, 12:15 - 5 p.m.
Join NPS Director Jon Jarvis, NPS Acting Associate Director for Partnerships and Civic Engagement Rich Weideman, and staff from Oregon Parks and Recreation Department in completing a base trail around Pilot Butte, at Pilot Butte State Park. MG Devereux of Oregon Parks and Recreation will provide an introductory session on the value of community involvement in park management. Work groups will join an Oregon parks employee at varying work locations and will use wheelbarrows and hand tools to complete the trail and install carsonite markers. At the end of the four hours of volunteer work, we hope to rededicate the park. Coordinator: Pat Grediagin

My Life with the NPS: Real Life Behind the Glory, 7-8 p.m.
Working for the National Park Service (NPS) isn't all about wearing the flat hat, talking with visitors, and generally being very cool. Listen to 3 NPS employees describe their best & worst days, the evolution of their careers, living conditions (housing, drives for groceries, park communities, living in remote areas, working in cities, schooling for kids, etc), the good & the bad & the beautiful. Learn about the ANPR mentoring program and have a ranger answer (try to answer?) your questions. Moderator: Pat Grediagin

Environmental Advocacy and Political Challenges, 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Founded by Stephen Mather in 1919, the National Parks Conservation Association works to protect and enhance America's national parks for present and future generations. This panel will provide an overview of NPCA's advocacy efforts to increase park funding, preserve park resources and seize opportunities to better protect and enhance the National Park System. NPCA will also discuss current political challenges and the outlook in the years ahead leading to the NPS centennial and beyond. Moderator: Amy Gilbert

Environmental Leadership: Elwha Dam Case Study, 3:30-5 p.m.
What was involved in passing the 1992 Elwha River Ecosystem and Fisheries Restoration Act, and how did it result in next year's removal of Elwha Dam? Learn about the first major restoration of an ecosystem within a national park. Moderator: Pat Grediagin

Current Developments in Interpretive Leadership, 3:30-5 p.m.
Join a panel of leaders in NPS interpretation and education to discuss national trends and their application in the Pacific West region. Topics will include the re-establishment of an Associate Director for I & E, the Director's four policy priorities for the program, the establishment of the Interpretive Leader Development Program with Yosemite as a case study, updates on interpreting critical issues and civic engagement, interpretation's role in the Resource Learning Centers, and an update on the Interpretive Development Program and new distance learning opportunities. Moderator: Kale Bowling

What's Happening with SROC, 3:30-5 p.m.
The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is a centralized NPS seasonal hiring center created to provide efficient seasonal recruitment services for all parks. These services include preparing vacancy announcements, verifying applicants' qualifications, issuing referral certificates and answering applicants' questions. Last year the SROC recruited for seasonal park ranger GS-0025-05/07/09 and park guide GS-0090-03/04/05 positions. Beginning Oct. 1, 2010, the SROC added management of visitor use assistant GS-0303-04/05/06 positions. Marcia Schramm will provide updates on this service.
